TEDx Prague Women

In this TEDx talk, given at the TEDxPragueWomen edition in autumn 2018, I talk about art as a way of social therapy.

Why do I make art?

I have always wanted to dedicate my life to art. Fortunately, life has granted me the opportunity to become an artist. Even though it is sometimes challenging to persevere through life’s turbulence, art is still worth fighting for.

What is art to me? Above all, it is about freedom—freedom of self-expression, exploring ways to communicate with the world, and the joy of experimenting. I love the process of taming ideas, no matter the medium.

I want my art to become part of people’s lives—to be visually captivating and provide just the right amount of distraction. I want to have fun with this thing we call “art” in our culture, and I hope others will join me in that joy. To me, this kind of fun is profoundly therapeutic.

More about me

A fascinating artist who both challenges and elevates. Her main motto could be: don’t be afraid! Be enchanted by art! Dare to embrace boldness! Art can carry complex themes, and provocation is a delightful bait.

(Text for the exhibition catalogue)

Her sculptural objects provoke with erotic boldness, while also frustrate with their abstract elusiveness. Barbora Maštrlová likes surprising contexts.

…the language with which all the artworks speak to the viewer is clearly formulated, and despite the complexity of the themes and emotions, it is almost straightforward. I really appreciate that the works don’t need any accompanying commentary—they simply work and communicate the intended emotions.
